For the Queenstown Arterial Road project, ECOTONE delivered colour and protective treatments on precast retaining walls that honour both form and cultural meaning.
Materials & application
Working within Cancast's precast facility, the team refined colour palettes, design motifs and concrete finishes using the ECOTONE Matt emulsion stain system. The process extended from workshop collaboration to final site completion, where ECOCLEAN Ultra Graffiti Shield was applied to protect the finished precast surfaces — allowing full creative control while maintaining durability in a demanding public environment.
Outcome
The new connection between Melbourne Street and Henry Street reduces congestion through Queenstown's town centre, but its impact runs deeper. The precast retaining walls feature integrated Māori artworks created with Kāi Tahu artists, representing whakapapa, connection to whenua and local Ngāi Tahu stories. The result is public infrastructure that balances technical performance with cultural expression.
